A Salmon-Filled River
Discover Naknek Lake, a premier destination offering history, fishing, and remarkable brown bear viewing opportunities. In June, bears gather along the Brooks River corridor, eagerly anticipating the arrival of 200,000 to 400,000 salmon. Witness their dynamic displays of diving, running, splashing, and relentless pursuit of fish. Bears may be spotted on the lake shores, near the camp, crossing pathways, and, of course, from observation platforms. Capture iconic shots from elevated vantage points above the river, marveling at the incredible views and the renowned allure of Brooks Falls.
Visit Brooks Falls, or Brooks Camp, to witness the iconic spectacle of salmon battling upstream, leaping over waterfalls only to be captured by Coastal Brown Bears. Peak bear numbers occur in mid-July. After a scenic flight on our floatplane, receive a safety briefing from Park Rangers at the Visitor's Center. Explore the park at your own pace, with the fallsβwhere bears gather for fishingβjust a straightforward 1-mile walk from the center. Observe bears fishing, join ranger-led programs, stroll along the beach, and savor a hot meal or coffee at Brooks Lodge.
